Welcome to the home page of Crawford-Brown Energy and Environmental Consultancy, where you will find descriptions of my activities and ways to engage me in ventures to bring about a sustainable world through innovative energy and environmental strategies. CBEEC is a transatlantic consultancy which retains a home in both Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Cambridge, UK.

I was a Professor of Environmental Sciences and Policy, and Director of the UNC Institute for the Environment, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until March, 2008. Spurred by a personal committment to helping address climate change, I left university life and moved to Cambridge in England, where I now hold two positions while remaining Professor Emeritus and Director Emeritus at Carolina:

  • Senior Sustainability Advisor for the firm Pell Frischmann, a multi-disciplinary and full-service engineering consultancy. I work within the Sustainability Team there and am engaged in projects that bring sustainability to the built environment in the UK, US, EU and elsewhere. This includes everything from providing strategic planning for organizations to supporting the design, construction, operational and demolition processes in ways that minimize energy use and environmental impacts.
  • Scientific Principal in EnviroTech, a Cambridge-based firm that creates networks of, and provides crucial services to, innovators, investors, adopters and providers of technologies striving to bring creative ideas forward into the market. My role there is primarily to bring rigorous scientific, technological and policy analyses to bear on decisions regarding research, investment and/or deployment decisions of partners in the EnviroTech network.

I have more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of environmental, energy and sustainability work. This includes advanced research, education and engagement, with past projects involving partners in business, industry, government, academia and NGOs. I have served on a wide array of state, national and international committees and have provided advice on risk assessment, energy policy, climate change and sustainability to hundreds of communities, environmental organizations, businesses and governments in the U.S., U.K., E.U. and Asia.
